In a significant move towards integrating emerging technologies with India’s traditional healthcare systems, the All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA), New Delhi, has launched a National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Challenge for Ayurveda. The initiative was announced during the sixth Foundation Day celebrations of AIIA’s incubation centre, AIIA-iCAINE, held on October 29, 2026.
Titled ‘AyushTech Innovate: National Open Ayurveda AI Challenge’, the initiative aims to encourage researchers, technology developers, startups and innovators to explore practical applications of artificial intelligence in Ayurveda.
The challenge is being organised by Techfest, IIT Bombay, in collaboration with the Ministry of AYUSH and AIIA. It will make use of AyurParam, an open-source Ayurveda Large Language Model developed by IIT Bombay, to encourage the creation of reliable, transparent and responsible AI-based solutions for the Ayurveda sector.
Bringing Artificial Intelligence into Ayurveda
The challenge seeks to explore how AI can support different aspects of Ayurvedic healthcare, research and knowledge management. Participants will be encouraged to develop solutions involving Ayurvedic clinical practice, digital access to classical texts, research assistance, treatment-related decision support and healthcare communication.
The initiative aims to bring technology professionals and Ayurveda experts onto a common platform, creating opportunities for innovation while maintaining the authenticity and traditional foundations of Ayurvedic knowledge.
The national grand finale is scheduled to take place at IIT Bombay from December 15 to 18, 2026.
Strategic Partnerships to Promote Innovation
The Foundation Day programme also witnessed the signing of two important Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) aimed at strengthening the Ayurveda innovation ecosystem.
The first MoU was signed with the World Ayurveda Foundation (WAF) to establish the AI in Ay – Secretariat for Artificial Intelligence in Ayurveda. The proposed platform will support collaborative research, funding opportunities, capacity-building initiatives, hackathons and startup incubation.
The second agreement was signed with Reliance Retail Limited (Pahadi Local). This partnership will focus on translating classical Ayurvedic knowledge into commercially viable skincare products through formulation guidance, product development, testing, manufacturing and marketing.
New IPR Facility to Support Ayurveda Innovators
Another important development was the launch of an Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Facility dedicated to Ayurveda. The facility is intended to help researchers, innovators and entrepreneurs understand intellectual property protection and safeguard their innovations.
A capacity-building workshop on entrepreneurship and design thinking was also organised during the celebrations. The programme covered important areas such as product development, branding, pricing strategies and understanding consumer needs.
Six Years of Supporting Ayurveda Startups
Established on October 29, 2021, AIIA-iCAINE has developed into an important incubation platform for Ayurveda-based entrepreneurship and innovation.
According to the institute, the incubation centre has supported 52 problem statements, mentored more than 100 startup ideas and provided seed support of ₹3 lakh each to nine startups.
During the celebrations, AIIA Director Prof. Vd. P. K. Prajapati highlighted the institution’s progress and its efforts to encourage entrepreneurship, research and innovation in the traditional healthcare sector.
Towards a Technology-Enabled Ayurveda Ecosystem
The launch of the National AI Challenge represents an effort to connect India’s traditional medical knowledge with modern technological capabilities. By encouraging collaboration between Ayurveda practitioners, researchers, academic institutions and technology developers, the initiative seeks to create new opportunities for innovation.
As artificial intelligence continues to transform healthcare and research, such initiatives could help expand access to Ayurvedic knowledge, strengthen research capabilities and encourage responsible technology adoption.
Through the National Ayurveda AI Challenge and its new institutional partnerships, AIIA aims to contribute to a more research-oriented, technology-enabled and innovation-driven future for Ayurveda.
