A team of researchers at the Sri Ramachandra Medical University, Chennai claim to have come up with a cure for ulcers using copper (thamira parpam) in the right proportion with herbo-mineral Siddha formulations. Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, the university’s pro-chancellor (research), Prof S.P. Thyagarajan, recalled that copper in Siddha literature was referred to as Gunma Kaalan ( cure for ulcers) “Our team prepared the thamira parpam (TP) making 5 mm copper sheets and mixing them with juices of medicinal plants like aristolochia bracteata and alangium salvifolium using pudam methodology. This way we were able to detoxify the copper and make it to react with the juices”, he explained. The team evaluated the anti-ulcer efficacy of TP against aspirin and pylorus ligated ulcers in sprague dawley rats in three different doses. The in-vivo studies on the anti-ulcer efficacy of copper containing a herbo-mineral formulation, showed promising results, he claimed. Prof Thyagarajan maintained his team had disproved claims by allopaths that it was not safe to use metals in treatment of diseases. The department of science and technology (DST) funded the project under its metal-based drugs programme to verify claims by doctors of Indian systems of medicine that metals can play a major role in curing diseases.
