AYUSH Goes Global : India Signs 75 MoUs to Boost Traditional Medicine
A Vision Rooted in Tradition, Powered by Diplomacy

In a landmark move to globalize India’s ancient wellness systems, the Ministry of AYUSH has signed 75 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with countries and institutions worldwide. This bold initiative aims to promote the holistic health systems of Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy—collectively known as AYUSH—across the globe.
A Vision Rooted in Tradition, Powered by Diplomacy
The initiative forms a key part of India’s strategy to promote its soft power by highlighting its rich heritage of traditional medicine. Of the 75 MoUs signed, 24 are country-to-country agreements, while 51 are institution-to-institution partnerships. These collaborations span areas such as academic exchange, clinical research, educational training, and healthcare services.
“This initiative marks a new chapter in the global journey of AYUSH. It reflects India’s commitment to holistic health and well-being, not just domestically, but internationally,” stated officials from the Ministry of AYUSH.
Strategic International Cooperation
The agreements fall under the Central Sector Scheme for the Promotion of International Cooperation (PIC) by the Ministry of AYUSH. The scheme provides support for:
-
Facilitating the export of AYUSH products and services.
-
Supporting AYUSH service providers and manufacturers in foreign markets.
-
Establishing AYUSH Academic Chairs in overseas institutions.
-
Conducting international workshops, seminars, and collaborative research programs.
-
Promoting Yoga and wellness activities in different countries.
WHO-backed Global Centre for Traditional Medicine
A significant milestone in this global outreach is the establishment of the Global Centre for Traditional Medicine (GCTM) in Jamnagar, Gujarat. Supported by the World Health Organization (WHO), this international institution aims to bridge traditional medicine systems with modern science, evidence-based practices, and technology.
The GCTM will serve as a global hub for data, innovation, policy development, and capacity building, reinforcing India’s leadership in holistic wellness.
Ayush Visa – Boosting Medical Tourism
To further facilitate access to traditional Indian medicine, the Indian government has launched a new Ayush Visa (Category AY). This special visa is tailored for foreign nationals seeking AYUSH-based medical treatment in India. The move is expected to significantly boost medical tourism and establish India as a leading destination for natural, holistic healing.
Conclusion
With these 75 MoUs, India is not just promoting its cultural heritage but also offering the world an alternative model of healthcare rooted in balance, wellness, and sustainability. As the global appetite for natural and preventive healthcare grows, India’s AYUSH systems are poised to play a transformative role in global health.
AYUSH is no longer confined to India—it is going global, healing globally.
