Cultivating Prosperity: Bandipora Hosts Seminar on Entrepreneurship in Medicinal Plants
Suitable medicinal crops for J&K’s climate

In the lush valleys of Bandipora, where nature thrives in its most pristine form, a promising opportunity is taking root — quite literally.
On May 31, the District Ayush Office Bandipora, in collaboration with the J&K State Medicinal Plants Board, organized an insightful seminar titled “Scope of Entrepreneurship in Cultivation of Medicinal Plants” at the Mini Secretariat, Bandipora. The event brought together farmers, budding entrepreneurs, and youth from across the district, all eager to explore this fast-growing and sustainable sector.
🌱 A Green Business Revolution in the Making
The focus of the seminar was clear: how the cultivation of medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs) could unlock new paths of income and entrepreneurship — especially for small-scale farmers and rural youth.
With growing demand for herbal remedies and wellness products globally, medicinal plant farming is no longer a niche — it’s the future.
🗣️ Voices of Insight
Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Zaffar Husson Shawl, who graced the occasion as chief guest, emphasized how this sector offers a win-win: boosting rural livelihoods while protecting local biodiversity.
“We are sitting on a green gold mine. Medicinal plants like ashwagandha, tulsi, and artemisia can become powerful tools of self-reliance,” he said. “And we, as an administration, are fully committed to supporting our youth and farmers in this journey.”
A technical officer from the State Medicinal Plants Board shared an engaging presentation on:
-
🌾 Suitable medicinal crops for J&K’s climate
-
💸 Central government schemes and subsidies
-
🧪 Processing, packaging, and value addition
-
📈 Marketing channels and buy-back options
Farmers were particularly interested in how small land holdings could yield high returns with the right medicinal crops — making it a more practical and sustainable option compared to conventional farming.
👩🌾 Turning Youth Into Green Entrepreneurs
With rising unemployment and land underutilization in many rural areas, the seminar made a compelling case for agri-entrepreneurship rooted in nature.
Young participants expressed enthusiasm after learning how even 1-2 kanals of land could be used to grow high-demand crops like lemon grass, kalmegh, and aloe vera — all supported by government-backed buy-back policies and training.
🧭 What Comes Next?
The District Ayush Office assured ongoing support in terms of:
-
🌐 Linking farmers with verified buyers
-
🧑🔬 Providing technical know-how and field guidance
-
💼 Helping with loan applications and subsidies
In closing, the ADC urged attendees not to let this opportunity pass.
“Start small, but start today. Bandipora has the potential to become a hub for medicinal plant entrepreneurship,” he noted.
🌿 Final Thought
In a region blessed with nature’s bounty, the seeds of a green economy have been planted. With government support, awareness, and entrepreneurial spirit, Bandipora’s farmers may soon find their future not just in the soil, but in the healing power of plants.
