Yoga at 11,500 Feet : National Institute of Sowa-Rigpa Hosts Special Session in Leh
This event is part of a broader series leading up to the 11th International Day of Yoga

Leh, March 25, 2025 – Against the stunning backdrop of the Himalayas, the National Institute of Sowa-Rigpa (NISR) in Leh marked the 100-day countdown to the International Day of Yoga with a special yoga event. At an altitude of 11,562 feet, the event brought together students, faculty, and yoga enthusiasts for a rejuvenating session focused on holistic well-being.
The participants followed the Common Yoga Protocol developed by the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga, incorporating breathing techniques, asanas, and meditation. The high-altitude setting added a unique challenge, making the session a true test of endurance and mindfulness.
Dr. Padma Gurmet, Director of NISR, emphasized the deeper essence of yoga, stating, “Yoga is not just a practice; it is a way of life that nurtures both the body and the mind. Its holistic approach fosters resilience, inner balance, and overall well-being.” His words resonated with many attendees, reinforcing the idea that yoga extends beyond physical exercise to mental and emotional harmony.
Adding to the enriching experience, Ms. Tsewang Lhamo, a yoga instructor from the Mahabodhi International Yoga and Meditation Centre in Leh, led the session. She highlighted yoga’s role in enhancing flexibility, reducing stress, and fostering mindfulness. “Practicing yoga regularly can help individuals maintain inner peace amidst daily challenges,” she noted.
This event is part of a broader series leading up to the 11th International Day of Yoga, which will feature ‘Yoga Sangama’—a synchronized yoga demonstration at 10,000 locations worldwide, aiming for a world record.
For the participants, practicing yoga amidst the breathtaking Himalayan landscape was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The event not only underscored the physical and mental benefits of yoga but also highlighted Leh’s growing significance as a hub for wellness tourism.
With the countdown to International Yoga Day officially underway, NISR’s initiative sets the stage for a grand global celebration of holistic health and mindfulness.
