Doctors and Students Join Hands for Yoga Awareness in Puducherry Ahead of International Yoga Day

Breathe in healing.... Breathe out stress...

With the sun rising gently over the Bay of Bengal, a quieter revolution has been unfolding in the classrooms and corridors of Puducherry’s medical colleges. Ahead of the 11th International Day of Yoga, doctors, medical students, and yoga practitioners gathered for a vibrant seminar that fused science, tradition, and community spirit.

👨‍⚕️ Where Medicine Meets Mindfulness

The seminar, organized as part of the Puducherry Yoga Mahotsav, wasn’t just another lecture series. It was a conversation between generations—young MBBS students scribbling notes and seasoned physicians reflecting on stress, burnout, and the need to heal the healers.

“We talk about holistic care for patients,” said Dr. Meenakshi V, a senior physician. “But it has to start with us—doctors too need grounding, balance, and breath.”

🧘 Themes That Resonate

Across the session halls, three key ideas echoed:

  • Yoga as Preventive Health: Daily practice improves immunity, regulates sleep, and reduces anxiety—critical not just for patients, but also for those in the medical field.

  • Integrating Yoga in Medical Education: Faculty from various colleges called for Yogic modules to be embedded into medical curricula—not as an elective, but as a necessity.

  • Research-Driven Wellness: Students presented emerging evidence linking yoga to lower cortisol levels, enhanced focus, and long-term cardiovascular benefits.

Anusha M, a second-year student, said:
“I never thought pranayama could help with exam anxiety. But after today, I’m going to try it out.”

📣 A Countdown with Intention

This seminar is just one of many in Puducherry’s 25-day countdown to International Yoga Day on June 21. The larger “Puducherry Yoga Mahotsav” was flagged off with over 6,000 participants stretching under open skies at Gandhi Thidal—a symbolic reminder that yoga belongs not just in retreats, but in streets, schools, and clinics.

🌿 More Than a Day, A Way of Life

The tone of the seminar was clear: Yoga is not a one-day ritual, but a sustainable approach to life and healing.

“In surgery, we need precision. In diagnosis, we need clarity. Yoga gives us both—by calming the chaos inside,” noted Dr. Arun, a senior surgeon who led a group meditation session during the break.

From Anatomy labs to Ayurveda halls, Puducherry’s medical ecosystem is beginning to breathe with new awareness. And as Yoga Day approaches, this seminar stands as a beacon—showing that the future of healthcare may be as much about stillness as it is about science.

🧘 Breathe in healing. Breathe out stress. The revolution is already on the mat.
