A food festival was organised in Chennai by the National Institute of Siddha, featuring kashaayams and kalis made with completely natural ingredients, was an eye-opener for residents of the city. Different preparations to treat diabetes, obesity and joint pain were available for sale at nominal prices. Curious bystanders sampled the offerings, some of the youngsters did not seem too keen but adults not only tasted, but also asked about the ingredients and how to make the dishes at home. Chennai Corporation Mayor  Saidai S Duraisamy inaugurated the two-day festival on Saturday morning. He had a bite of uzhutham kali and took a look at the displays and plants. Dr K Veerababu of the siddha hospital said, “We want to demonstrate to people the healthy intake of food, especially the food of our forefathers. That was the reason they were fit and healthy up to a venerable old age. Through this we are also showcasing the benefits of siddha medicine.” The stalls included one on aloe vera. Explaining how to use the plant, one of the volunteers said, “The easiest way is to break the stalk, peel off the outer skin and take the gel. Before eating it or drinking the juice, the gel should be washed six times in fresh water.” “Applying the gel to the face would remove marks on the skin and keep it smooth” he added. Herbs and plants used in siddha medicine were also on display. Manju, 45, said, “I am very glad to see this initiative being taken, since I am a firm believer in the healing power of siddha medicine. I hope others see the benefits and adopt it.”
