Siddha Varmam Saves Passenger Mid-Air: AYUSH Secretary Rajesh Kotecha Applauds Doctors for Swift Action

A routine domestic flight turned dramatic last week when a passenger suddenly collapsed with severe giddiness mid-air — but it took an unexpected traditional intervention to stabilise him. Two Siddha physicians on board stepped in with Varmam therapy, a classical touch-and-pressure-point technique, helping avert what could have become a serious medical emergency.

The Ministry of AYUSH has now formally commended the duo, calling their intervention “timely, calm, and exemplary.”

A Crisis at 30,000 Feet

According to officials, the passenger became acutely unwell shortly after takeoff. Despite the cabin crew’s first response, the situation remained unstable. That’s when Dr. Elavarasan and Dr. Gowtham — both trained Siddha practitioners — volunteered to assist.

Using Varmam therapy, which involves stimulating specific energy points to restore physiological balance, the doctors managed to quickly bring the passenger’s dizziness under control. Witnesses described the improvement as “almost immediate.”

AYUSH Secretary Meets and Honours the Physicians

Impressed by their presence of mind, AYUSH Secretary Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha invited the two physicians to New Delhi for an official interaction.

He praised their professionalism:

“Your calm handling of the situation reflects the real strength of Siddha medicine. This incident shows how our traditional systems can offer life-supportive benefits even in emergency contexts.”

Kotecha noted that the mid-air rescue not only saved a passenger but also highlighted the practical value of Siddha Varmam therapy when performed by trained experts.

A Spotlight on Siddha in Public Health

Officials say the incident has sparked renewed interest in promoting structured Varmam training for frontline medical staff and the public. The Ministry believes such techniques could serve as an accessible supplementary response method during medical emergencies.

Passengers, Crew Express Gratitude

Crew members and fellow passengers reportedly thanked the doctors for their composed and confident intervention. The airline is also believed to have shared positive feedback with the Ministry.

A Proud Moment for Traditional Medicine

The successful in-flight rescue has now become a celebrated example within the AYUSH community — a reminder that India’s ancient medical systems continue to offer relevant and practical solutions even in the most modern of settings.
