International Day of Yoga 2026

The City of Joy is set to become the center of global wellness celebrations as Kolkata has been selected to host the main national event for the International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2026 on June 21. This year’s official theme has been announced as “Yoga for Healthy Ageing.”
The announcement was made by Union Minister of State for Ayush, Prataprao Jadhav, during the “Yoga Mahotsav” programme held in Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh, marking the countdown to International Day of Yoga celebrations.
According to the Ministry of Ayush, the 2026 theme highlights the increasing importance of yoga in helping people lead healthier and more active lives as they age. Officials said the focus will be on promoting physical fitness, mental well-being, emotional balance, and overall quality of life through regular yoga practice.
Speaking at the event, the minister noted that yoga has evolved into a global wellness movement and continues to gain popularity across different age groups worldwide. He added that the government aims to encourage people, especially senior citizens, to adopt yoga as part of their daily lifestyle to improve long-term health and vitality.
Kolkata’s selection as the host city is being viewed as significant due to its rich cultural heritage, spiritual traditions, and growing wellness community. Thousands of yoga enthusiasts, healthcare professionals, students, spiritual organisations, and visitors from India and abroad are expected to participate in the grand celebration next year.
The International Day of Yoga has been celebrated annually since 2015 after India’s proposal at the United Nations received overwhelming global support. Over the years, the event has transformed into one of the world’s largest public wellness movements, with participation from millions across continents.
As part of the countdown activities, mass yoga demonstrations, workshops, awareness campaigns, and community outreach programmes are being organised in different parts of the country. The Ministry of Ayush stated that these initiatives aim to spread awareness about yoga’s role in preventive healthcare and holistic well-being.
Health experts associated with the programme also pointed out that yoga can play a major role in managing stress, improving flexibility, maintaining mobility, and supporting mental health among the elderly population.
The Ministry expects the upcoming International Day of Yoga celebrations in Kolkata to further strengthen India’s image as a global leader in wellness, traditional health practices, and holistic living.
